Having Fun For Free Across The UK

Wednesday 02nd March 2011

In today’s tough economic climate, finances may be tight but it’s still as important as ever to have a bit of fun now and then. Luckily, there are tonnes of things to do across the UK which won’t cost you a penny, and they are just as interesting as the more expensive activities which can stretch a budget for the whole family. One of the best ways of getting a great day out is to visit a park or garden, particularly if you have been cooped up indoors for a while.

Why not pop along to a venue such as Sheffield’s Winter garden, which is designed to accommodate visitors through the colder months, getting you out and about regardless of the weather? The Winter Garden is a huge greenhouse with over two thousand plants showcased from all over the world. Even people who don’t have green fingers can appreciate the beauty of their surroundings in this unique venue, giving you great access to natural daylight and a host of things to see.

If you’re an outdoorsy type, camping is a fantastic option to get you out of the house on a bargain break. While many camping venues can set you back financially as much as booking in to a B&B could, Scotland offers a wealth of free or low-cost opportunities for hitting the great outdoors without breaking the bank. The Land Reform Act which was passed in 2003 means that wild camping is perfectly acceptable in most places, as long as you steer clear of private properties or road areas. Turn up, pitch your tent and enjoy spending time outdoors, for absolutely nothing!

For those among us who like to see spectacular scenery and incredible views, there are few better places to visit than the famous White Cliffs of Dover. With views which at times can look right over to the French coast, you can walk along myriad different trails to get a great burst of daylight and spend time relaxing as you ramble. There are activities for children, which make the location ideal for family trips out.

If you’re an animal lover, there are plenty of places you can go to get a fix without having to pay the entry fees for the larger zoos across the UK. Animal sanctuaries and farms often provide free access, and if you feel inclined it’s also worth making a small donation to offer your support. Check out the Donkey Sanctuary in Sidmouth, Devon, for a fantastic day out petting donkeys, walking through the maze and seeing all of the sights in the nature centre.

Visiting museums across the UK is a great way of spending some free hours, without spending anything. From the open-air St Fagans’ National History Museum near Cardiff, which has over forty historic buildings re-erected in a hundred acres of parkland, to the International Slavery Museum in Liverpool, there is a museum for everyone, regardless of your personal interests. Look online to find great places near you to get a culture fix and gen up on local history, without paying for the privilege.
