Alternative European Holiday Destinations

Europe is well known for having a wealth of outstanding holiday destinations which attract millions of visitors each year. When we think of European vacations, we automatically consider Parisian chic, London glamour, Italian elegance and Greek dining. However, Europe is changing, and this means that there are more fabulous places to visit than ever before, many of which are not yet fully on the tourist radar for holidays. If you are looking for something a little different from your annual break, why not consider some of these beautiful destinations, to offer you a glimpse of another side of the Europe which we all know and love-
Munich
Munich is rapidly becoming the first choice for people wanting to visit a part of Germany which offers the full complement of culture and tradition, with a Bavarian charm and tradition that will keep even the most jaded travellers enthralled. Rub shoulders with residents in Lederhosen, enjoy the rustic charm of beerhalls, and dine on the finest Weisswurst to get a true glimpse of Germanic culture at its best. Even with all this history vying for your attention, you’ll still get a fix of modernity with a bustling range of attractions including museums, art galleries, shopping to satisfy evben the most hardened haggler and a huge number of outstanding restaurants.
Antwerp
Belgium is becoming a holiday destination to be reckoned with, and it’s places like understated Antwerp which are cementing its reputation as a beautiful European destination. Antwerp is a lovely fusion of the modern and traditional, with cobbled streets, impressive architecture and a bustling community of Belgians who are welcoming and warm. No longer the underdog of years gone by, Antwerp enjoys a thriving shopping scene packed with boutiques and the stalwart of all Belgian cities – a huge array of mouth-watering chocolates.
Valencia
Spain may be better known for the bustle of Barcelona, but Valencia is climbing its way up in the style stakes when it comes to choosing a gentle and relaxing city to spend your Spanish break. Valencia is famous for its orange groves, providing beautiful scents and scenery, but also offers a healthy number of things to do including architectural visits, beach trips and the opportunity to kick back and relax on sun-soaked shores for a fraction of the price you would have to pay to get a similar break outside of Europe.
Cork
Move over, Dublin. It’s all about Cork now. This up and coming tourist destination has all the charm of the capital, without the associated price tag and hordes of tourists. Chill out on the banks of the River Lee nursing the obligatory Guinness, before heading off for an exploration session to find opera houses, art galleries and a multitude of traditional pubs nestled in among the old buildings in cramped alleyways. Featuring all the best Ireland has to offer, including hospitality and an unrivalled dining culture, Cork is quickly becoming the latest craze for people looking for an Irish fix off the beaten track.
Rotterdam
If you thought Holland was all about Amsterdam, think again. Rotterdam is becoming well known for offering everything which its more popular rival city provides, but without the seedy underbelly of drugs and the sex trade. Artists from around the world flock to Rotterdam for a fix of the outstanding architecture and scenery, developed following WWII by a handful of quirky architects who’s collective efforts resulted in a crazy fusion of different styles which all work well together. Add in great food, beautiful surroundings and a welcoming dose of hospitality to the mix, and you’ll be left wondering why you ever went anywhere else.
Whatever destination you choose be sure you choose Travel Ready to supply and meet all your travel needs.

The Highest Restaurant In The World

If you’re a little bored of PG Tips and Digestive biscuits, it could be time to book a holiday which could bring you something a little more unusual for your dining pleasure. Rather than hanging out at a humdrum restaurant, why not consider booking a flight to Dubai in the United Arab Emirates, and eating out at the world’s highest restaurant-
At.mosphere is the newest craze for fine dining in the UAE, situated on the 122nd floor of the tallest building in the world – Burj Khalifa. In among some of the most luxurious hotels and restaurants it’s possible to visit, the latest restaurant to attract attention in Dubai is taking fine dining to a new level. Situated 442 metres above ground level, the building is gaining recognition for both its unique positioning and luxurious menu.
Intrepid diners can access At.mospehre by taking a lift from the ground floor of the building to the 122nd floor in under one minute. With space for over two hundred customers, the venue boasts a principal dining area and a number of private rooms for the more discerning diners. The menu is a modern take on traditional European gastronomy, appealing to a wide variety of tastes and preferences. Also people wanting to visit for the view rather than a full meal can take afternoon tea.
The venue may be spectacular, but all diners are expected to pay through the nose for the privilege of eating at such heights. With a simple cup of coffee setting you back around five pounds, the price for a full mean in the private dining area may deter most visitors, setting each person back by over one hundred pounds.
Before the venue was opened, the 360 restaurant in Canada held the title as the world’s tallest venue. However, At.mosphere looks set to change high tea forever. The chairman of the company which developed the venue, Mohamed Alabbar, has commented: "At.mosphere is about offering the best in dining. Every aspect of the restaurant has been carefully designed and executed - be it the elegant decor, warm ambience, food choice and service standards."

Whatever your taste, Travel Ready has luggage to suit you. With over thousands of products to choose available, you will find many brands to choose from including the world reknowned Samsonite and Carlton.

Are our flight expectations unrealistic?

A recent survey of cabin crew conducted by Virgin Atlantic has revealed that passengers can at times have expectations of their flight which are more outrageous than your average viewing of Little Britain. Crew have told researchers a number of stories about their passengers which illustrate the lack of knowledge which many travellers have when they first embark upon a flight, whether they are going long-haul or staying closer to home. The research surveyed three thousand cabin crew from Virgin Atlantic to find out more about the types of queries and requests the staff encountered as they jetted off with their plane full of passengers.
Some of the more unbelievable anecdotes have shown that passengers have boarded the Virgin flights in full expectation of experiencing something akin to a day at the mall, with people enquiring where the McDonalds restaurant is on board, and how they can gain access to the nearest massage parlour.
Other stories tell of people who have embarked on their journey are reported to have complained that they are unable to open the windows to get some air circulating around the cabin, and have asked bemused cabin crew if they could turn down the noise of the engines to support them in getting a good rest before they arrive at their chosen destination. Many others complained about the cabin being pressurised, seemingly unaware of the benefits of this system, and made requests to speak to the Captain, in an effort to get the weather to calm down and reduce the amount of turbulence which was felt mid-flight.
Among some of the more laughable enquiries involved people requesting to use the shower before arriving at their destination, and one shameless passenger asking if their Barbie Doll could get a massage before landing. Flight attendants are also regularly asked to support passengers with more outlandish requests such as helping out in locating a glass eye which had gone amiss, and having to explain that there was no playroom onboard for bored and tetchy smaller passengers.
The relationship manger for customers of Virgin Atlantic, Caroline Lynam, commented: “Virgin Atlantic crew will always go that extra mile to offer our customers the best possible service but there are some requests that even we find somewhat challenging."

Where A-Listers Go On Vacation

If life and work are leaving you feeling a little jaded, it could be time to drop everything in favour of booking a fabulous holiday. No-one knows how to vacation better than the rich and famous, so it makes sense to follow their lead when it comes to choosing the most luxurious destinations. Celebrities have a nose for sniffing out high-end holidays, knowing the best possible luxe spots for fine dining and pampering, so take a leaf out of the top A-listers’ book and make like a celeb on your next trip away…
Visit India for sun, sea, sand and sheer luxury
Katy Perry and Russell Brand recently got hitched in the Aman-e-Khas resort, revelling in the beautiful scenery and amazing surroundings in Northern India. Few places have as much historical importance, fabulous heritage and breathtaking culture as colourful and vibrant India, and you can make like a celeb with a very low budget as the prices of everything are cheap, and the opportunities for celebrity pampering are endless. Hang out in Kerala, check out the Bollywood scene in Delhi, or track history in Calcutta for the ultimate in cultural and historical splendour.
Jet off to Paris for pampering
Paris has always been known as the seat of couture, chic and inestimable elegance. Join the likes of Isla Fisher and Sacha Baron Cohen, Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes and a host of other jetsetters who understand that when it comes to showing off in style, only the lucury of Paris cuts the proverbial mustard. With a history worthy of even the most discerning culture vulture, architecture to make you stand still in your tracks and boutique shopping unrivalled across the world, Paris is a perfect luxe celebrity destination.
Flutter in Las Vegas
From breathtaking views of the Bellagio from Ocean’s Eleven right through to images of the gambling scenes in James Bond, celebrity and Vegas have gone hand in hand since time began. All of the best trashy weddings take place here (sorry Britney) and it’s an ideal venue for getting lost in a fairytale land of excess and tacky splendour. Castles, moats, pyramids and stages jostle for your attention in this, the most loved and frequented venue for spending, overindulging and blatant, beautiful excess.
Bake in the Bahamas
Palm-fringed white sandy beaches, gentle picturesque ocean and a climate which makes you want to remain permanently resident outside, the Bahamas is a top spot for a host of celebrities who understand that, sometimes, you simply need to drop it all and head off in to the sun. With an A-list to make you weep, the Bahamas attracts celebrities including Penelope Cruz (who got married there last year, Michael Douglas and his Welsh-born wife, Fran Walsh and Peter Jackson.

Having Fun For Free Across The UK

In today’s tough economic climate, finances may be tight but it’s still as important as ever to have a bit of fun now and then. Luckily, there are tonnes of things to do across the UK which won’t cost you a penny, and they are just as interesting as the more expensive activities which can stretch a budget for the whole family. One of the best ways of getting a great day out is to visit a park or garden, particularly if you have been cooped up indoors for a while.
Why not pop along to a venue such as Sheffield’s Winter garden, which is designed to accommodate visitors through the colder months, getting you out and about regardless of the weather- The Winter Garden is a huge greenhouse with over two thousand plants showcased from all over the world. Even people who don’t have green fingers can appreciate the beauty of their surroundings in this unique venue, giving you great access to natural daylight and a host of things to see.
If you’re an outdoorsy type, camping is a fantastic option to get you out of the house on a bargain break. While many camping venues can set you back financially as much as booking in to a B&B could, Scotland offers a wealth of free or low-cost opportunities for hitting the great outdoors without breaking the bank. The Land Reform Act which was passed in 2003 means that wild camping is perfectly acceptable in most places, as long as you steer clear of private properties or road areas. Turn up, pitch your tent and enjoy spending time outdoors, for absolutely nothing!
For those among us who like to see spectacular scenery and incredible views, there are few better places to visit than the famous White Cliffs of Dover. With views which at times can look right over to the French coast, you can walk along myriad different trails to get a great burst of daylight and spend time relaxing as you ramble. There are activities for children, which make the location ideal for family trips out.
If you’re an animal lover, there are plenty of places you can go to get a fix without having to pay the entry fees for the larger zoos across the UK. Animal sanctuaries and farms often provide free access, and if you feel inclined it’s also worth making a small donation to offer your support. Check out the Donkey Sanctuary in Sidmouth, Devon, for a fantastic day out petting donkeys, walking through the maze and seeing all of the sights in the nature centre.
Visiting museums across the UK is a great way of spending some free hours, without spending anything. From the open-air St Fagans’ National History Museum near Cardiff, which has over forty historic buildings re-erected in a hundred acres of parkland, to the International Slavery Museum in Liverpool, there is a museum for everyone, regardless of your personal interests. Look online to find great places near you to get a culture fix and gen up on local history, without paying for the privilege.

The Top Best-Value Holiday Destinations For Brits

Winter is finally over, and as spring blossoms our thoughts naturally turn to the best season of the year – holiday season. With travel more accessible than ever before, the old adage that the world is our oyster has never been truer. However, financial difficulties across the UK can mean that many of us may be looking for something a little more economical than usual when we plan out trip abroad. With this in mind, the following destinations provide incredible value for money for British holidaymakers, both in terms of getting to the destination, and not breaking the budget once you arrive...
Portugal Even though the Pound is still weak against the Euro, Portugal has somehow managed to remain a really competitive player in the tourism market when it comes to offering great value for money, for visitors. As a result of the exchange rates which were at risk of deterring tourists, Portugal has reduced its prices to make sure that goods, services and foods remain great value for money – leading to an almost fifty percent reduction on many tourist amenities and restaurants since this time, last year.
Czech Republic While Prague endures as one of the most popular European holiday destinations for travellers, the Czech Republic still enjoys very cheap prices for visitors. Steering away from the capital means that the savvy spender can have the trip of a lifetime in the smaller cities and towns, enjoying superb scenery, fabulous beer for pennies rather than pounds, and top-quality restaurants at a fraction of the price which you would pay in the UK. This situation won’t last, however, as the country is planning to switch to the Euro next year, so make the most of the price while you still can!
Bulgaria Beautiful Bulgaria is enjoying a growing reputation as one of the friendliest, most picturesque and economical places to visit in Europe. With low prices and fantastic cuisine, a trip to Bulgaria will offer you everything you require from a great trip, without stretching your pennies too far. Meals are extremely cheap, as are drinks, and the prices were recently given the thumbs up by the International Currency Exchange for staying low without compromising on quality.
Sri Lanka Sri Lanka may be further afield than your European destinations, but it is doubtless one of the most charming and economical countries you can visit. Gentle welcoming people and outstanding cuisine make this country a real contender for a budget holiday, overshadowing places such as Malaysia and Thailand when it comes to offering value for money. With meals available for less than a pound, it’s probably one of the cheapest long-haul destinations available.
Mexico Mexico is the place of the moment for Brits looking for a bargain holiday destination. Setbacks to the tourist industry including the swine flu outbreak in 2009 mean that business has been slow when it comes to the Mexican tourist trade. Because of this, the rate of the Peso fell, and it is still in recovery. This means that visitors get an amazing rate on food, souvenirs, bars and shopping, and it’s fine to haggle with vendors to get the price down even further if you’re in the mood!

The 10 Best Holiday Destinations In The World - Part 1

Everyone has a different view of what constitutes the ideal holiday. While some think that a lively destination full of clubs and bars is the perfect way to unwind, others may prefer to make like Robinson Crusoe and stow away to a desert island for a couple of weeks. Whatever floats your holiday boat, the following destinations are well-known for being the best in class when it comes to offering a specific type of holiday perfection…
Alghero, Sardinia: The quiet retreat
For those of us who like a quiet life, there are few places more suited to relaxed living and unspoilt scenery as Alghero in Sardinia. As yet undiscovered by the tourist masses, this beautiful Italian island offers gorgeous coastlines, wide open spaces and a distinct lack of development. With no busy nightlife to contend with, there are enough quiet bars and restaurants to cater for all preferences, without plunging the harried traveller in to the thick of a throng of people. Cycling, sailing and hiking your way through a holiday here will be guaranteed to leave you feeling as stress-free as it gets.

The New Air Zealand Cuddle Class

Have you ever been on a flight and wished you could spend more time with your partner, who has been seated a few rows away- Or had a honeymoon, only to find yourself sitting next to a grumpy traveller instead of your new spouse- It can be frustrating to spend the hours of a long-haul flight in isolation, and even when you are sitting next to the person you are holidaying with, the seats can be so cramped and tight that you can’t sit in comfort or enjoy the journey.
Finally, an innovative airline may have come up with a solution for the pitfalls of air travel with a partner – Cuddle class. Air New Zealand have developed the Cuddle class concept as a way of letting romantic couples spend time together, without having to endure lengthy flights alone. In April, the airline will launch the new concept, based around their ‘Skycouch’ seats, which are made up of three economy class seats in a row. With a few simple manoeuvres, the seats can be changed in to a couch which a couple can comfortably snuggle up on for the duration of the flight.
To benefit from the new scheme, two people who travel together will be able to purchase the middle seat on their row for half the price of a usual seat, and then fold up the arm rests to make a space which is the equivalent of a twin bed. Stretching out in style, they can then enjoy a much more luxurious flight with a much lower price tag than they would pay for going first class and purchasing the extra space. Parents can also use the middle seat for their children, making their flights more comfortable and setting up a dedicated play area for the duration of the flight.
The chief executive of Air New Zealand, Rob Fyfe commented on the new approach to flying couples: “For those who choose, the days of sitting in economy and yearning to lie down and sleep are gone. The dream is now a reality, one that you can even share with a travelling companion – just keep your clothes on.”

How To Get Free Upgrades On Flights

We’ve all heard the stories – an unsuspecting couple are standing near the back of the queue at the airport, and all of a sudden they find themselves whisked from economy class to first, in an amazing stroke of luck through a free upgrade. It seems that most people have, at some point, been given the enviable opportunity to ascend the ladder of the airline heirarcy.
However, these stories always seem to happen to someone else. If you’ve not yet had the happy experience of being upgraded, here’s the lowdown on optimising your chances of travelling in style at no extra cost…
Let staff know if you are celebrating an occasion
If you’re off on your honeymoon with your new spouse, heading off for a birthday celebration or about to live it up on a stag weekend, it may be worth letting the staff know as you check in for your flight. Depending upon what mood your check-in desk attendant is in, they may feel like treating you to a free upgrade if there is space and they feel that way inclined. Don’t expect anything as your given right, but be polite and simply keep your fingers crossed and see what happens.
Travel alone
People who occupy a single seat are more likely to be upgraded than people who travel in pairs or groups. This is because often planes have the odd seat left untaken on a flight, while couples looking to sit together will make up most of the booking. It’s much easier for a member of staff aboard the plane to ask you to move and sit somewhere else if you are alone, and it’s possible that this move may entail a free upgrade to a different class.
Check in early
Those travellers who check in early are more likely to be given an upgrade than the stragglers who turn up at the last minute. Staff appreciate that you made the effort to be on time and issues with seating are usually known about as soon as the check-in desk opens for admitting passengers. This means that the earlier you arrive, the more scope you have for a free upgrade to Business or First class, as your check-in desk attendant is looking to resolve issues straight away and sort out who is going to be sitting where on the flight.
Dress respectably and cleanly
It goes without saying that airline staff won’t choose to pop someone in business class among the suited and booted if they are looking a little worse for wear. It may be an old trick, but dressing well and looking clean and presentable really can increase your chances of getting a free upgrade.
Be friendly and courteous
A pushy passenger has absolutely no chance of getting upgraded on a flight, primarily because all seat bookings are done at the discretion of the member of staff who deals with them. It stands to reason, then, that people who are smiley and friendly, polite and nice to deal with are much more likely to be on the receiving end of perks than the more surly, complaining or grumpy passenger.
Be responsive
Often on a flight, the airline staff will be in a position where they have to juggle seats around after boarding in order to satisfy the needs of all the different passengers on the plane. This could mean that families need to sit together, or someone has a phobia of windows, or the people who have been placed in the emergency exit aisles are not suited for the task in hand. If an air steward asks you to be flexible and move to a different seat, volunteer. The chances are that you will be upgraded for being prepared to help out, if there is any space available, even if you are not told this prior to volunteering.
